HelloMetro sur le Inc 5000 List

HelloMetro hit the Inc 5000. I was employee four, and left when it hit eleven employees, and moved on to Austin, TX.

Kick Back and Relax, Until the Servers Crash

You always remember your first. My first startup was quite a ride. I started as tech employee 2, then the company grew to over 15. I’m a designer, not a developer, and for me, the hardest thing I did there was put together my own desk. After we moved to a larger office, each one of us had to put together our own desks, and I tried to follow the directions, but ended up modding my desk, so the CPU would fit into the drawer space.

We were always pushing the servers, and they would crash, or our code would crash them. Quoi qu'il en soit, it had to be taken care of, and there was no development environment, because the opportunity cost was too high. Time to market was the most important factor, above stability, above a great UX.

    I’ll never forget my first.

Keeping the Daily Scrum Standup Short

While at HelloMetro, in order to keep the daily standup meetings short, each member in the scrum team got the ‘flooras long as they could do push-ups. This kept the meetings short, and effective.

    Sparking Creativity and Innovation

Unifying a work group, and helping them find the uniqueness that they create to spur creativity and innovation. While at HelloMetro, I bought the team matching Puma Shoes. They were slip on shoes, and we kept them at the office for a few weeks. That would let us slip them on to wear them out to lunch. It was a great way to help us feel solidarity, besides working through all the server problems.

Another important factor, by introducing the unexpected, it helped get the team out of their ordinary routines.

    Mon expérience: Visualizing the Chronology

Some have called me a job hopper. Based on my history, thats a true statement. What I disagree with is the perspective and negative language used in the description. I’ve done a lot, much more than most peopleI’ve worked in retail, publishing, ad revenue, healthcare. I’ve worked for four person startups, and Fortune 100 companies. I’ve looked to the new. A lot of people want to stay in college all their life because they love learning new things. I love learning new things, trop. I think I would have stayed in college all my life, if we learned while building rather than learning alone.
