    Big Bear Café near SiriusXM

The move to DC has caused a short disruption in the flow of coffee, in particular around my work place, SiriusXM. There is Tynan and Starbucks, both slightly above mediocre and within walking distance. Tynan is consistent with their coffee and has a very limited lunch menu. They run a sandwich, chips and tea special that is popular.

Then there is Big Bear Café on R & Florida. It’s best to ride or drive over from the SiriusXM offices, and it has the best coffee in the area hands down. It’s more of the ‘U Street’ rather than the ‘NoMa’ variety of eateries.  Big Bear Café has a very respectable lunch, and dinner s pretty good. As most coffee shops, it gets packed with customers (and non-customers) – so prepare to sit close to your neighbor.

Loving The Peet’s Coffee at SiriusXM

The first day at SiriusXM was an exciting day, not only it being the first day of being at SiriusXM, but I saw that they has coffee labeled Peet’s. The excitement soon waned as I realized the machine was broke. Disappointment set in as I realized what could have been, in better days.

The Search for New Espresso Cups

A few days ago one of my Sagaform / Crate & Barrel espresso cups broke, and now I’m down to three. The short, I’m on the humt for a new set of four. Over the weekend, I went shopping for new cups, and couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. I went to Pier 1, Crate & Barrel, William Sonoma, and so many other places.

My Five Favorite Things – 2012 Edition

I go through an annual exercise of picking my five favorite things that I own. The reasons can be practical, sentimental, or simply because I like it. In my selection, I try to stay away from selecting things that can be easily replaced, like my phone. The exercise is to find out more about myself, and what are the things that make me unique.

Since I’m in the process of moving to DC, I now have the least amount of things than I think I ever have. As I went through my house, and looked around, it was hard to find things that I wanted to keep, and were not also easily replaceable. My list, as it stands now, is:

    Paul's DevilRobot Be@rbrickPaul's Disney's FigmentPaul's Boxer DogPaul's Francis Francis Espresso MakerPaul Sizemore's Favorite Thing

    • my espresso machine, a Francis Francis X1
    • my Devil Robot Be@rbrick 400%
    • my concrete boxer
    • my signed Mr Potato Head
    • my Figment toy

My Figment toy is a new addition, and has just recently come out of retirement. I’ve had it packed away for many years, but it came out, and became one of my favorite things because of a game I play with it. My girlfriend and I hide him in different places, for the other to find.

My signed Mr Potato Head. It’s on loan from a dear friend. It’s one of the greatest things I have, and it’s signed by the designer, Brett Koth.

I bought my concrete boxer for my grandfather, and took it from Evansville, IN to his home in Ohio. It rode in the front seat of my convertible, with the seatbelt on. After my grandfather passed, I took it back. It’s been a good dog the entire time. Boxers are great dogs.

My Devil robot 400% Bearbrick kept burning itself into my brain until I bought it. While in NYC, I saw it at Toy Tokyo, and didn’t buy it. For close to a year I kept thinking of it, until it went on sale. That was all the reason I needed to buy it.

Coffee. Espresso. My Francis Francis X1 helps me manage my addiction to caffeine, and is stylishly retro while doing it. Still, to this day, it’s one of my favorite machines – and it has a brass boiler.

Shawn Coots of the team Anti-Villian before the 48HFP

Yesterday was the kick-off for the Louisville 48 Hour Film Project, and while there, I interviewed a few of the film makers. Swan Coots of team Anti-Villian summed up the weekend, and as I interview others, and asked them the same questions, the workflow for all seem close to the same:

Kick-off, write, alcohol, write, sleep, coffee, film, alcohol, sleep, coffee, edit.
